One of the major areas in which we are
continually seeking to expand is in energy. We
provide fresh produce during most of the year,
and a large amount of energy is needed to make
this possible.
Carbon dioxide is a by-product of combustion,
which many companies that produce heat simply
release back into the atmosphere. We have
installed condensers on our boilers to trap the
carbon dioxide, and send back into the
greenhouse through a closed delivery system.
This process makes our boilers more efficient.
Since pepper plants take up carbon dioxide and
give off oxygen, we are able to both limit
carbon dioxide build-up in the environment and
improve general plant health.
Another area of conservation can be seen in our
water system. Instead of allowing excess
irrigation water to drain away from the
greenhouse, we have installed a drain return
system that collects water not taken up by the
plants in order to reuse it. Of course, because
it is recycled water, we run it through an
ultra-violet light sterilizer so we can be sure
it is clean and safe to use.
We are also currently investigating several
different clean energy alternative for heat and
electricity production. |
